Research Mandates of the Department
Modeling and management of environmental resources using geo-information and other related technologies
Regular assessment and monitoring of Nigeria’s forest and environmental resources.
Collection and analysis of meteorological data.
Using weather data for the prediction of onset and cessation of rainy season and the occurrence of fire danger index for forest fire prediction to farmers.
Research into growth, yield and management of economic tree crops.
Development of mathematical models for growth and yield of different forest tree species.
Updating of data information on variability of growth of forest plantation.
Determination of appropriate time of application of suitable silvicultural treatment e.g. thinning, pruning, etc. for enhancing the productivity of forest plantations.
To monitor changes in vegetation cover.
Development of early warning prediction for climate change
. Driving conductor in getting Nigeria’s readiness for REDD as well as REDD++ and any other national and international initiatives that fall within the research mandates of the Institute.
To conduct research into carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, carbon stock estimation and carbon sequestration
Managing, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emission.
To conduct Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND REMOTE SENSING
(A) Develop skills and knowledge in: -
- Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) ii. Satellite Meteorology and Global Climate Dynamics
iii. Space and Atmospheric Science
iv. Space Law

(1)Reconnaissance/ Forest Mapping for:
- Forest/Vegetation – cover assessment
Forest – cover type discrimination
Forest – land/habitat uses
(3) Environmental Monitoring:

Assessment of deforestation/forest degradation
Site conservation monitoring particularly in special areas such as:

Watersheds
Coastal zones
Wetlands
Peculiar areas
Montane forests/vegetation Ramsar sites, etc.
Vegetation /Soil Mapping

FOREST BIOMETRICS SECTION
1.Research into growth, yield and management of economic tree species
2. Development of mathematical models for growth and yield of different forest tree species
3. Updating of data information on variability of growth of forest tree species through establishment and management of permanent/inviolate sample plots in Nigeria
4. Determination of appropriate time of application of suitable silvicultural treatment e.g thinning, pruning, etc for enhancing the productivity of forest plantations
5. Provide the needed biometrics/statistical support to the research activities of all research departments of the institute for valid designs and analysis of experiments
6. Provide updated research knowledge through refresher training programmes to FRIN staff and researchers in other allied professions from time to time
7. Create, update, maintain and manage forestry statistical information (databank) to contain all information on forestry locally, nationally and globally.
